MASBEDO – Videomobile

Videomobile a project by MASBEDO at Manifesta 12

Artist’s note

We transformed an old OM van of the 1970s into a “video wagon” to visit places of the cinema of the past, to investigate Sicilian society and the history of the Palermo area. The project “physically” runs through and crosses memory, specifically the memory that emerges from investigative cinema. The Videomobile has been restored and “customised” with cameras, screens, lights, sound system, in order to allow film production and video projections. It is a totally autonomous vehicle, free to move around, to reach any place, to stop anywhere.Videomobile is a moving studio: it functions in fact as a laboratory and stage for performances, some of which will be realised live during the Biennale. Before the opening of the Biennale Manifesta 12, Videomobile instead hosted several of our performances on the open theme of cinema in Palermo. When on show, Videomobileis a modular and accessible video installation, a narrative device on various monitors and screens. We wanted to create a multi-channel documentary work – titled Welcome Palermo, whose content is essentially a conceptual and social reinterpretation of still topical cinema themes. We have elaborated images that reveal the dynamics of power and the socio-cultural

changes hidden in Palermo’s present, paying particular attention to themes such as the sense of belonging or genius loci and faith in utopias. The first phase of our research was the creation and filing of interviews with characters who have worked in cinema in an almost anonymous or marginal form, with secondary characters, such as make-up artists, extras or technicians. A second phase of our research replaced the latter with better known figures such as directors, intellectuals, producers or politicians. A third and last phase included some of these figures in the realisation of performances produced with our Videomobile in the streets and squares of Palermo where cinema was and still is a protagonist. We could therefore claim to have realised a sort of performative tour, a journey in some sense, through the world of images of De Seta, Mingozzi, Antonioni, Gregoretti, Baffico, Rosi, Pasolini, Letizia Battaglia, Mimmo Cuticchio and many other directors, authors and artists who have succeeded in creating other worlds in the city of Palermo.
